ALL ABOUT TRIPODS-Part 2 Paul Franklin (r)
Let's look at the features of a tripod...

Bogen On Tripod

Non-geared, “pull-up” center columns are fastest and offer less parts to wear out or break. You’ll most likely prefer a tripod lacking secondary attachments to the bottom of the center column, as independently-adjustable legs are much easier to use on uneven surfaces.

How about height? The top of the tripod (with no head attached) should be about the height of the middle of your sternum (breastbone.) Why? Add about 4 inches for the tripod head and another 4 for the camera and the viewfinder should be at the perfect level for shooting. Should you get a tripod any shorter you’ll have to elevate the center column to reach eye height, and the center column is inherently less stable – it’s essentially a monopod on top of a tripod. Find out how low the tripod will go. Many if not most tripods will go to near ground-level, and there’s a number of situations (macro, for instance) where a low tripod angle is essential.

Another consideration is the number of leg sections. Few leg sections (typically three) generally means less flexing and more stability. On the other hand, 4 leg sections tends to result in a far smaller package – ideal better for packing for air travel or for strapping onto a camera bag when trekking to or between shots. A 4-section carbon fiber tripod can be tiny, feather-light, and rock-steady, for instance, while a 3-section aluminum tripod may be the ideal inexpensive, durable, general-purpose camera support.

Tripods are available in several different materials: notably aluminum, basalt, and carbon fiber.

Aluminum is the traditional and by far the most common choice. It is the least expensive of the three, very durable, and reasonably stiff. Thinking of moving up?

Basalt or lava is intermediate in price, much lighter than aluminum, but generally not as stiff. Another major point in basalt’s favor is that it does not transmit heat and cold – it tends to remain at a stable temperature in any environment.

Carbon fiber tripods are what many serious photographers aspire to. Is weight important to you? They are remarkably light, very stiff, and almost indestructible. A carbon fiber tripod is expensive, but…it will probably be the last tripod you ever buy.
